HOW WE EVALUATE PRODUCTS
The criteria we use to assess apparel — what we look at, what we verify, and what we label as opinion.
Last updated: July 2026
Core principle: We separate verified facts from editorial opinion. Every factual claim in our articles is sourced. Every opinion is labeled as an opinion. We never describe a product as tested unless genuine testing occurred.
Evaluation Criteria
Materials
We document fiber content, fabric weight, and construction materials from brand specifications and manufacturer documentation. We note when materials are certified (e.g., OEKO-TEX, GOTS, recycled content claims) and verify those certifications where possible. We do not evaluate material quality through personal handling unless an editor has physically examined the product.
Construction
We assess seam type, stitching density, reinforcement at stress points, and finishing quality based on brand documentation, product photography, and — where available — independent reviews from verified purchasers. We note construction details that are relevant to durability and intended use.
Fit
We document fit descriptions (relaxed, regular, slim, athletic) and size range availability from brand specifications. We note when a brand's sizing runs large, small, or inconsistently based on documented customer feedback patterns. We do not make personal fit assessments unless an editor has worn the product.
Comfort
Comfort assessments are editorial opinion unless based on documented testing. When we describe a product as comfortable, we identify the basis for that assessment: brand claims, verified customer feedback, or personal editor experience. We do not present comfort claims as objective facts.
Versatility
We assess how many contexts a garment is appropriate for based on its design, materials, and construction. Versatility assessments are editorial opinion and are labeled as such. We identify specific use cases the product is suited for and those it is not.
Care Requirements
We document care instructions from brand labels and product pages. We note when care requirements are unusually restrictive (dry clean only, hand wash only, line dry only) and assess whether those requirements are practical for the intended use case. Care information is sourced from the brand.
Price and Value
We document the retail price range at the time of writing and note when prices vary significantly across retailers. Value assessments — whether a product is worth its price — are editorial opinion and are labeled as such. We compare price to documented specifications and construction quality, not to subjective impressions.
Retailer Reliability
We consider the reliability of the retailers through which a product is available: return policy, shipping practices, customer service reputation, and whether the retailer is an authorized seller. We do not link to unauthorized resellers or marketplaces where counterfeit products are common for the brand in question.
Customer Considerations
We document patterns in customer feedback — sizing inconsistencies, durability issues, care problems — from verified purchase reviews. We distinguish between isolated complaints and documented patterns. We note when a product has a high rate of returns or a documented quality control issue.
Long-Term Usefulness
We assess whether a product is likely to remain useful over time based on its construction quality, material durability, and design. Long-term usefulness assessments are editorial opinion. We note when a product is designed for trend-driven use versus long-term wear, and we assess value accordingly.
Standards by Article Type
Best-Product Lists
Every product in a best-list article includes: who it is best for, documented key features, materials and fit based on brand specifications, documented advantages, documented limitations, verified price range, and available retailers. We explain how selections were made and what criteria were used. We do not claim a product is the 'best overall' without specifying best for whom and under what conditions.
Product Reviews
Product reviews clearly separate verified specifications — documented by the brand or independent testing — from editorial opinion. We include a disclosure box at the top of every review stating whether our editors have personally used the product. We never claim personal testing experience we do not have.
Comparisons
Comparison articles use structured tables with documented specifications. We identify meaningful differences, not cosmetic ones. We do not declare a universal winner; we identify which product is better for specific use cases. We note when brand-published performance figures use different baselines and cannot be directly compared.
Buying Guides
Buying guides explain what to look for in a product category based on documented criteria. Recommendations are based on the criteria outlined in the guide, not on affiliate commission rates. We identify the trade-offs between options at different price points.
Trend Reports and Industry News
All trend claims are sourced from verified data: earnings reports, regulatory filings, documented research. Editorial interpretation of what trends mean is clearly labeled as such. We do not present speculation as fact.
Brand Profiles
Brand profiles are based on publicly available information: financial filings, press releases, independently verified certifications, and documented product specifications. We disclose any affiliate relationship with the brand at the top of the article. We distinguish between verified claims and brand-attributed statements.
